War in China Over Sale Of iPhones

December 1st, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

Two cell companies in China want their share of the iPhone and the profit it will bring. These two companies are China Unicom and China Mobile. Many stores in China have reached deals with China Unicom to provide the iPhone to their customers. China Mobile, however, thinks otherwise. It recent letters sent to retailers who have reached deals with China Unicom, China Mobile said:

Many cell phone distributors received formal notification that “Selling iPhones is not recommended,” or “Selling iPhones is not allowed or China Mobile will fine you or stop cooperation with you.”

This letter was sent to stores that have distribution deals with China Mobile as well as China Unicom and others.

Any social channel that signed a contract with us (China Mobile) is not allowed to engage and process related business for our competitors, is not allowed to display and sell competitors’ products, is not allowed to market or recommend competitors’ products in any form.

The funny thing is, China Mobile doesn’t even have a deal with Apple to offer the iPhone. Apple passed them over in favor of selling the iPhone with China Unicom.

Oh No! iPhone Worm!

November 12th, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

Recently, in Australia, there has been a worm going around that infects jailbroken iPhones that have SSH installed with the default root password of “alpine.” This worm does nothing but changes your wallpaper to a picture of Rick Astley. To protect yourself from this worm (it hasn’t spread any further then Australia) you can either a) not jailbreak your iPhone or b) change the default SSH password. If you already have your phone jailbroken, changing the SSH password is extremely easy. To find out how to, click here. Antivirus firm Sophos has analyzed the code for this exploit and found that there is no malicious code contained within this worm. It was designed as an experiment to draw attention to the vulnerability. A MacRumors Australia forum poster ike_x has taken credit for the exploit and is offering affected users assistance in removing the worm.

Use this as an example. Make sure you do everything you can to protect any devices that you own from be exploited. iPhone included.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert Coming To The iPhone And iPod Touch

October 22nd, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

I received news a couple days ago that Command and Conquer: Red Alert is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch. For those of you that don’t know, Command and Conquer is a real time strategy game. In a fact sheet that EA sent me, they noted that some of the key features in this game are:

ACHIEVE VICTORY WITH TOUCH-SCREEN POWER
Drag and scroll to gauge the battlefield. Pinch-zoom in and out of the action. Select and move units with a tap. Control multiple units at once!

CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE FACTION
Fight for Soviet domination or battle to restore peace with the Allies. Deploy military might unique to each side and engage in different campaign storylines.

BATTLE THROUGH 12 COMBAT LEVELS
Fight in Skirmish Mode on two different battlefield maps with war squads you create and control.

MANAGE TROOPS ON REALISTIC BATTLEFIELDS
Command units in different environmental conditions. Build your base and manage supplies with a new easy-to-use combat system.

ARM YOURSELF FOR TOTAL WAR
Employ classic units like Kirov Air Ships and new units like the Paladin Tank. Or R&D new technologies to destroy your enemies.

Being a history buff, I can’t wait until this game comes out on the iPhone. It seems like it would be so much fun to play. It also looks like it would be a good game to pass the time. Look below to see some of the screenshots that have been released so far.

Flight Control Coming To The Nintendo DS

October 4th, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

If you wanted to develop a game, what platform would you develop it for? iPhone, Android, PSP, Nintendo DS? If I were a developer, I know I would want to develop for more then one. Some iPhone developers are begining to figure this out as well. In fact, a very popular game on the iPhone, Flight Control, is coming to the Nintendo DS.

Firemint, the developers of Flight Control have decided to port the game from the iPhone to the Nintendo DSi. In a recent press release, Firemint said:

Flight Control is one of the all-time most popular paid games for the iPhone and iPod touch, and is the first title on that platform to have announced sales of more than 1,500,000 copies. It has reached the #1 paid app position on the iTunes charts in 20 countries including USA, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Australia. The simple but highly addictive gameplay challenges players to touch aircraft and drag a path to their correct landing zone, while avoiding collisions.

Flight Control DSi will make ideal use of the stylus and touch screen, with the top screen displaying score and other information. It will be Firemint’s first self-published game on the platform, and further extends the studio’s focus on digital distribution. The expected arrival date of Flight Control is Q4 2009.

This interesting move leaves me wondering if other great games on the iPhone like Ocarina, Enigmo, and Fieldrunners will eventually be ported to other devices as well. I think that if this move is successful for Firemint they will continue to port to other devices. Other developers will also be soon to follow.

Do you think the port of Flight Control will be a success for Firemint? What are some other great iPhone games that you would like to see on other devices or consoles? Leave a comment!

Rhapsody App Approved by Apple

September 18th, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

Apple has finally approved the Rhapsody app! Streaming music lovers all over the world rejoice! In case you don’t know, Rhapsody is a service from RealNetworks that provides on-demand streaming music for a monthly fee. The reason that everyone thought that Apple would reject this app was because it would compete with Apple’s iTunes Music Store and app on the same device. To use this app, you need to be a Rhapsody To Go subscriber:

If you’re already a Rhapsody To Go subscriber, all you need to do is download the app and sign in. If not, we invite you to try out the all-you-can-eat service for free! The app is yours to test out, and learn to love, for seven days (no credit card required). After that, you’ll need to either subscribe or continue not hearing what you want, when you want.

The only thing that I am not happy about is that this app isn’t from Napster.

It’s Only Rock And Roll, But We Like It

September 10th, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

In an event on Wednesday, September 9th 2009, Apple held an event to introduce new iPods, a new version of iTunes, and some new iPhone and iPod Touch software. The following is my wrapup and thoughts on the event.

iPod Nano

The first new iPod is the new iPod Nano. The big news is that this version now includes a camera that shoots video. The iPod Nano now also has a pedometer, microphone, speaker, voice recorder, more colors, and a larger screen at 2.2 inches. The Nano is available in pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and silver. All of these colors are made out of polished aluminium. It is avaliable now at the price points of $149 for the eight gig model and $179 for the sixteen gig model. One of the only things that I would still like to see added to the Nano would be auto-join of open Wi-Fi to upload your videos directly to your YouTube account. If the Nano had that, it would be THE BEST pocket video camera out there. You can read more about the new iPod Nano here.

iPod Shuffle

The iPod Shuffle didn’t get that much of a product change this time around. All that changed was the addition of new colors. The Shuffle now comes in pink, green, blue, black, and silver. The new Shuffle also comes in two models. A two gig model for $59 and a four gig model for $79. Apple is also releasing a special edition shuffle that will only be available at the Apple Stores and online at Apple.com. The special edition is a polished stainless steel four gig Shuffle that is available for $99. In my opinion, the stainless steel shuffle looks beautiful. If I was in the market for a Shuffle, this is most certainly the one that I would buy. Apple is also starting to work with many third-party headphone makers to get the special Shuffle controls onto more headphones then just the provided Apple headphones. You can read more about the iPod Shuffle here.

iPod Classic

The storage on the iPod Classic got bumped up to one hundred and sixty gigs from the current one hundred and twenty for the same $249 price point.

iPod Touch

Going against all of the rumors that we have been hearing for a long time, the iPod Touch did NOT get a camera in this refresh. Apple did, however, possibly leave a spot for it on the circuits. Read more about that here. The only thing that really happened to the iPod touch at this event was a price reduction and a speed bump. First and foremost, the eight gig iPod Touch was dropped in price from $229 to $199. Next the sixteen gig model was slashed and replaced with a thirty-two gig model. Finally, there was the addition of a sixty-four gig model. The thirty-two gig and the sixty-four gig iPod Touches both run Open GLES 2.0 for better game play. You can read more about the iPod touch here.

iPhone and iPod Touch Firmware 3.1

A firmware update for the iPhone and iPod Touch was also announced at the event. The following are some of the new feature in 3.1:

- Organize Apps Within iTunes
- Genius App Recommendations
- Genius Mixes
- Improved Syncing
- Download Ringtones Wirelessly

This update also includes all of the features from 3.0 if you haven’t updated yet. This update will be free for all iPhone users and $5 for iPod Touch owners who have not yet upgraded to 3.0. I have this update installed on my iPhone and it works great. You can read more about the new features in 3.1 here.

iTunes 9

The next big release of iTunes, iTunes 9, was also released at this event. This version contains many new features such as:

- A Redesigned (slightly) UI (User Interface)
- A Whiter Color
- A Redesigned Store (Finally!)
- Genius Mixes
- Home Sharing
- Manage Apps
- Faster and Better Syncing
- Better Selection On What To Sync
- iTunes LP

I have this version of iTunes installed on my computer and it is FAST! The older versions of iTunes used to be large, bloated, and memory-hogging. I can certainly tell that Apple has taken the time to streamline this program to make it faster and less taxing on your computer. To read more about the new features in iTunes 9, click here.

App Store adds “Top Grossing Apps” chart

September 9th, 2009 by Alex Ahlund

With the big announcements surrounding iTunes 9 and Apple product changes, one thing slipped by that we noticed: the introduction of a Top Grossing Apps section on the front page of the App Store.

We’ve been ranting about this for nearly a year so its interesting to see it finally coming onto the scene.  Its pushed down to the bottom of the App Store page, but this could be a fantastic new exposure channel for applications that are more expensive than the $.99 app, but still have a lot of value.  Having a list driven by revenue is a better indicator in many cases to the value of an application than just pure volume that is driven by impulse purchases.

MMS Coming To The iPhone On September 25th

September 8th, 2009 by Joe Spinogatti

Finally! After not being there on the June 17th, 2009 release of the iPhone 3.0 software, AT&T has finally gotten its butt in gear and is going to deliver the coveted feature on September 25, 2009. MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) lets you send attachments on text messages. Those attachments can range from simple pictures to things like videos and contact information (vCards). AT&T says that it wanted the feature to be as good as it possibly could before it was launched. I for one, am just greatful that it is coming sooner rather then later. Also, according to AT&T, the MMS feature will be turned on with a firmware upgrade. Based on this, I think we will finally see 3.1 on the 25th as well.

[Product Review] ZAGGphones headphones, from ZAGGaudio

September 7th, 2009 by Brian O'Neal

ZAGG, best known for its popular invisibleSHIELDs line of screen protectors, has been expanding into the accessories market. Among their new product offerings are ZAGGphones, a high quality pair of over-the-ear headphones. These headphones offer excellent fidelity, comfort, and aesthetics; however their price may be steep from some consumers.

[Discloser: We were sent a review unit of ZAGGphones for the purpose of this review.]

Acoustically, the ZAGGphones excel across the full audible spectrum. Bass comes thumping through, while mid and high tones remain crisp and distinct. It’s amazing how these headphones help you notice aspects of a song that just get muddled in a cheaper pair. In fact, it’s hard to put these on and not start a little foot tapping or fist pounding.

We found the headphones to be comfortable, even after hours of use. Similar to most headphones of this style, they contain generous amounts of padding around the ear and at the top of the head. Each ear cup pivots about two axes, and slides to accommodate various head shapes and sizes. The cups can also be rotated 180° for quick, one-ear listening. Although not technically noise canceling headphones, we found that they attenuated ambient noise surprisingly well. They were a significant improvement over typical headphones during a flight.

Aesthetically, the headphones stand out from the plethora of drab, bulky studio-headphones out there. They sport a more modern look, aided by black on silver accents and geometric styling. The headset feels durable; however the “Z” decal on one of the cups has already started to wear off. The cord is robust and coiled, allowing it to stretch from 4.5 to 11 ft. A 3.5mm to 1/4″ adapter and travel pouch are included with the headphones.

Overall, our impression of the ZAGGphones was very positive. They sounded great and were comfortable to wear. Our only complaint was with them showing more wear than expected after only three weeks of use. For a hundred dollars these headphones may be more than the average consumer is willing to spend, but they do make up for it in quality. We recommend them if you’re in the market.

Rating: 4.5 / 5
Price: $99.99
