Command and Conquer: Red Alert Coming To The iPhone And iPod Touch

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I received news a couple days ago that Command and Conquer: Red Alert is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch. For those of you that don’t know, Command and Conquer is a real time strategy game. In a fact sheet that EA sent me, they noted that some of the key features in this game are:

ACHIEVE VICTORY WITH TOUCH-SCREEN POWER
Drag and scroll to gauge the battlefield. Pinch-zoom in and out of the action. Select and move units with a tap. Control multiple units at once!

CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE FACTION
Fight for Soviet domination or battle to restore peace with the Allies. Deploy military might unique to each side and engage in different campaign storylines.

BATTLE THROUGH 12 COMBAT LEVELS
Fight in Skirmish Mode on two different battlefield maps with war squads you create and control.

MANAGE TROOPS ON REALISTIC BATTLEFIELDS
Command units in different environmental conditions. Build your base and manage supplies with a new easy-to-use combat system.

ARM YOURSELF FOR TOTAL WAR
Employ classic units like Kirov Air Ships and new units like the Paladin Tank. Or R&D new technologies to destroy your enemies.

Being a history buff, I can’t wait until this game comes out on the iPhone. It seems like it would be so much fun to play. It also looks like it would be a good game to pass the time. Look below to see some of the screenshots that have been released so far.

Flight Control Coming To The Nintendo DS

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

If you wanted to develop a game, what platform would you develop it for? iPhone, Android, PSP, Nintendo DS? If I were a developer, I know I would want to develop for more then one. Some iPhone developers are begining to figure this out as well. In fact, a very popular game on the iPhone, Flight Control, is coming to the Nintendo DS.

Firemint, the developers of Flight Control have decided to port the game from the iPhone to the Nintendo DSi. In a recent press release, Firemint said:

Flight Control is one of the all-time most popular paid games for the iPhone and iPod touch, and is the first title on that platform to have announced sales of more than 1,500,000 copies. It has reached the #1 paid app position on the iTunes charts in 20 countries including USA, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Australia. The simple but highly addictive gameplay challenges players to touch aircraft and drag a path to their correct landing zone, while avoiding collisions.

Flight Control DSi will make ideal use of the stylus and touch screen, with the top screen displaying score and other information. It will be Firemint’s first self-published game on the platform, and further extends the studio’s focus on digital distribution. The expected arrival date of Flight Control is Q4 2009.

This interesting move leaves me wondering if other great games on the iPhone like Ocarina, Enigmo, and Fieldrunners will eventually be ported to other devices as well. I think that if this move is successful for Firemint they will continue to port to other devices. Other developers will also be soon to follow.

Do you think the port of Flight Control will be a success for Firemint? What are some other great iPhone games that you would like to see on other devices or consoles? Leave a comment!

Astro Ranch - Launch Date And First Screen Shots

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Paul Farley over at Tag Games passed a link along to me the other day with information on Astro Ranch, their new iPhone game.

Above is one of the first in game shots of the game. I think that the graphics don’t look to great based on what we have seen from games like Super Monkey Ball and the like. I think that it looks a little too boxy in some places like on the wheel and on the plants. I hope that they improve upon the graphics before releasing the game.

The following is Tag-Game’s summary of what Astro Ranch is about:

Astro Ranch is set on an unidentified alien planet which our intrepid galactic explorer Sindy Starlight has accidentally discovered after crash landing. This may or may not have been caused due to checking her hair in the rear view mirror - mission control is still running the data on that particular question! Sindy must start from scratch to build a ranch and earn the cash needed to buy enough spare parts to fix her rocket and return home. It won’t be easy. The locals range from obsessively friendly to outright hostile plus the planet is host to all manner of hazards, natural disasters and weird goings on.

I think that Astro Ranch would be fun to play, though it would get old after a while. I bought Animal Crossing for the Wii, played it like mad for the first couple days, and I really haven’t touched it since then. They need to have something to get people back into playing the game once they close it. If it is in there, they haven’t revealed it yet.

What are you thoughts on this game? Would you buy it? What should Tag-Games add?

The following is the first video with in-game footage of the game Plushed for the iPhone and the iPod Touch:

When this game comes out, its price (as of right now) will be $3.99. It will most likely be released in September/October. From just seeing the in game footage, I can tell that this will be a game that I really will want to play when it does come out. The graphics look great and I love the music!

The following is a preview of Thor, an upcoming iPhone and iPod Touch game from On The Rocks.

One line description:
THOR, the son of Odin, embarks on a mission for glory and fame. With his powerful hammer “Mjölnir” takes on the forces of evil, and finally saves the day.

Description:
Thor, the son of Odin, is a young smith who craves for honor, glory and everlasting fame. One day, a magical hammer named Mjölnir gets tossed out of Valhalla and (accidentally) onto Thor’s hands. With the power of Mjölnir and his own godlike strength, he is ready to embark on a quest to save the world (and his father)!

Thor is a sidescrolling game with a mixture of pre rendered 3D sprites and 2D illustrations, in which the players get to play the thrilling scenes from the motion picture. It has four levels in which they have to collect as many volts and other items as they dodge and overcome several obstacles, in order to accomplish each level’s objective.
