Aqua Hoops is a throw back to the days before iPhones and other popular handheld devices. This game is a stripped down bare bones game, that still manages to entertain. Aqua Hoops has the same exact feel of the type of game it was modeled after.
You are given seven basketballs to shoot into three different goals. One goal at the top is worth three points and two lower hoops are worth one point each.
The controls are simple enough for anyone to grasp. Holding the iPhone or iPod Touch vertically you have two "plungers" in the bottom left and right corners. Pressing either of these creates a digital jet of water that then propels your basketball into the air. Depending on how long you hold the button down, you can go for a short shot or try the long shot for three points. You can also use the built in accelerometer to tilt left or right to add some finesse to your shots.
Graphically this game is very simple. There isn?t much need for flashy backgrounds or animations. You can go into the settings and change the colors of the background and menus and that is about it. However I did like the subtle inclusion of the "air bubble" at the top of the screen.
As far as sound goes, it is pretty simple as well. Pressing the "plungers" at the bottom creates a sound for the rushing water, and a simple chime is played for each basket you make. There is no background music, however you can play music directly from your library while in the game.
There are three different modes of play. Free play and both a one minute and three minute drill. Score as many baskets as you want during free play, and then test your skills against the clock. High scores are recorded on the device and can be uploaded to leader boards.
Aqua hoops is a fun little diversion from stressful more high speed games. It brought back many old memories for both me and my wife. This game is great for those times when you just want to relax and let your mind wander. At a price of 99 cents, it?s a bargain-bin trip back to the days before digital gaming.
