The iPhone has seen its share of location applications throughout its history. We've seen apps that try to build on the functionality of the already great maps application but we usually find ourselves resorting to just trying to find something in the default app. Aroundme is another location app that wants to make finding local places a bit easier for you. With the update that allows for the embedding of maps inside the app, Aroundme has made life a little easier by providing quick access to near locations. Now, the large argument about apps like this is that they don't really have anything that the default maps app can't do. I agree completely.
But Aroundme does have a feature that makes it easier to find locations faster while traveling. Instead of having to search for a location and type something in, Aroundme provides categories which can be easily tapped to find what you need. This is handy if you are driving or don't know what to specifically search for. I recently took a trip to Chicago and if I had known about this app before, it would have been much easier to grab directions to things while driving. This is the beauty of this app. It's not meant to be a replacement of the maps application, but it is meant to supplement it with easier navigation and quick reference.
Right from the app users can Tweet about the location, send a link via email or add the information to your contacts list. Once a location is chosen, the app can automatically open the maps application so users can get directions to it. For a free app, this could be extremely useful for someone going on a trip or who is unable to type at the moment. It work great while I tried it out and I would definitely recommend it.
