SUMMARY: A football mini-game with enough bang for your buck.

Backbreaker Football is a game that has been flourishing in the App Store due to its simple, addicting gameplay and impressive graphics. Although occasionally repetitive, this app offers enough to justify its petite price tag.

The objective of the game roots back to the original goal of football; get to the end zone without being pummeled by your opponents – although, in this game there is only you versus waves of players from the opposing team. They will attempt to tackle you while you spin, juke, and sprint past them. Along with enemies hunting you down at full speed, later levels in both the endless endurance mode and the five-part challenge mode include out-of-bound areas marked off by red lines that add variety to the standard football field.

I was skeptical at first about the tilt controls mixed in with touch controls, but after a while they flowed perfectly and I felt as though I had played the game before. Tilting forward, left, and right control your direction. On the left of your screen are three buttons for juking left, spinning left, and also one for showboating after a successful advancement past your foes. Similarly, the right side includes a button for spinning right, one for juking right, and one for sprinting if an opponent happens to be tailgating you.

The defining factor of this game has to be the detailed graphics and fluid animations. Most developers don\'t bother putting quality graphics into such a cheap application, but NaturalMotion must have know that this app would take off and really put time and effort into the aesthetics of Backbreaker. A great feature is being able to customize your player with multiple options like name, skin color, and team.

Although there is only one song for the menu, it’s enough to get me pumped up for the game and, mixed with realistic sound effects, the sounds of the game shine above apps with low-quality, unprofessional music and boring effects. Whether you like football or not, this one’s a definite buy. I’m looking forward to what it has to bring in the future but also very content with the quality in the present. Pick this one up before the price increases.
