Blimp, simply stated, is a breath of fresh air when it comes to innovative iPhone game development. Here's a game that is not only fun to play, but is also a detailed work of art. The developers of this game clearly took their time to create an amazing app that has not been seen before.
The app opens up with a message that suggests the player use headphones to play the game, and I strongly recommend doing so. The music and ambient sound in the game are top notch and listening to them with headphones really does suck you into the game's crazy world.
In Blimp, your character must complete several missions of varying tasks ranging from picking up and transporting workers to destroying enemy blimps. Each level, twenty in all, gets progressively more difficult and may be played multiple times to reach higher scores. You are in command of a blimp equipped with a limited number of bombs to defend yourself. Tapping on the lower right corner of the screen will start the flame thrower to fill the blimp with hot air, making it rise. Holding this button down with make the blimp rise faster. Direction is controlled with the accelerometer. The lower left corner of the screen will drop your bombs. The two corner buttons are small and labeled very lightly, blocking as little of the screen as possible.
These controls all work very well in the game, creating a very pleasing experience for the user. It actually reminds me of the classic game Asteroids. When you tilt your device to the left and give it some hot air, the blimp will continue in that direction until you tilt the device the opposite way to slow it down. There are no brakes, just thrust in one direction at a time.
It is not an anti gravity situation, so the blimp will decelerate on its own, but if you're traveling fast, you must tilt in the opposite direction to stop the blimp. If you want to travel downward, it's all gravity doing the work. You will have to use all of these skills to rescue stranded workers, pick up special objects, and attack enemy ships. Again, all these elements work very well in the game, but learning how to avoid crashing definitely takes some getting used to.
Each level is beautifully presented with artful scenes in the background that, combined with the music, really do engulf the user into the game. There are so many little details both in the level design and animations that you will surely appreciate. My only complaints with this game are the lack of sound effects and static AI. Music and ambient sounds are great, but there are some missing effects which will hopefully be added in the next update. For example, when your blimp hits a wall, there is no crash sound effect. When you tap the hot air button, you'd expect to hear some flames lifting the blimp into the air, but it's just silent. Also, the game's artificial intelligence is static. Enemies follow a predictable path back and forth across the screen. It would be nice if they at least had a small area they could travel in randomly. This would add a nice challenge to the game, appealing to more hardcore gamers.
Overall, Blimp is a beautiful, fun and challenging game. If you're sick of the same type of games coming out of the app store and are in need of something refreshing, then this is the game for you. I strongly recommend checking it out.
