SUMMARY: A location aware social networking app through Brightkite.com

Brightkite is a social networking app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that makes connecting to Brightkite.com that much easier. At the time of this review, the app is in a private beta which simply means that you need to request an invite before you can actually use the app.

Brightkite is all about letting people know where you are. Every time you log in you can have the app automatically locate you. From there, you can check in, which posts a little blurb about where you are. If you'd like, you can also add photos and post a note. These messages get broadcast to the Brightkite universe, meaning that anyone browsing all of Brightkite or your area will see your information.

All of the major profile changes need to be made on the website. From there you can set your picture, information, and alerts. Unless you want your phone buzzing all day, turn off the text alerts. You can view others profiles very easily just by selecting any of their posts and pressing the profile button. From there you can add them as a friend, message them, or view their location.

We've seen several social networking sites create an app for the iPhone. Many of them offer the same things just to a different audience base. When Brightkite goes live it may attract more people due to the features it has, but it's not like their competition is light. We'll have to wait and see how things pan out as they continue to improve their service.
