Coast Defense – Reloaded is absolutely one of the best arcade shooters available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The objective is to defend your bunker from wave after wave of enemy attacks. The levels start out easy, with only a few infantry units, but things quickly become challenging when tanks and air units start to attack.
There are plenty of games out there with a similar objective and layout to Coast Defense. However, this particular game really executes the gameplay well. You play the role of a soldier that seems to be singlehandedly defending a military bunker. You must shoot at and destroy every enemy unit that attempts to attack the bunker. At first, you have limited funds and are only able to use a rifle or a machine gun. However, as you progress, you will earn more cash that enables you to purchase more powerful weapons such as bazookas and nukes. The game boasts sixty levels, so there’s plenty of value to the app.
The controls are divided into three main parts. Your left thumb controls aiming by simply holding your finger on the screen and dragging it around. The crosshairs are staggered, so your finger never gets in the way. Your right thumb lets you fire your weapon and also allows you to switch between your weapons. You also have the ability to pan left and right across the screen by tilting your device in either direction. Overall, these controls work very well. However, I did experience some glitches with the fire button. Sometimes, my weapon kept firing even after I let go of the button. Also, I don’t really like the tilt-to-pan control. It just didn’t feel responsive enough. But, again, aiming and firing work well.
The graphics, sound and animations are all fantastic in this app. The explosions are definitely satisfying, and in the higher levels it gets pretty chaotic with constant gunfire and fireballs all over the screen. It’s absolutely one of the most fun arcade shooters I’ve ever played. I strongly recommend making the purchase. If you’re still on the fence, there’s a free version to check out first.
