Comet is a fun side scrolling arcade game that puts you in control of a small comet barreling through space. Your comet has to eat as much food as possible to gain points and level up, all while avoiding obstacles along the way. Why is there a ton of food floating in space? I have no idea, but it makes for an interesting game.
Controlling your comet is as easy as tilting your device up or down. Tilting up will move your comet up while tilting down will move it down. The comet travels at a constant speed throughout the game. While flying through space, you’ll need to collect all types of food such as cake, meat and fruit. These items will give you points so you can level up. The higher the level, the more difficult it becomes to dodge the obstacles in your way. These obstacles include asteroids, UFOs, refrigerators and other strange objects. If you hit an obstacle, you will loose HP. After your entire HP is gone, you lose the game. Your score and stats are then recorded on the leader board.
In addition to food, you can also collect power ups such as a weapon to destroy obstacles, health packs and invincibility. These power ups are all very useful, and fun as well. The chili power up will have you destroying everything in your path.
The game seems simple, but it can get very challenging as you level up. It becomes more and more difficult to dodge the obstacles as you travel through space. As a result, the game appeals to both the casual and hardcore gamers alike. What makes the game really fun is the combination of graphics, sound and controls. With the exception of music, all of these key components are very well executed in this game. The controls are incredibly smooth and responsive. If you need to get from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen quickly, your can do it easily with the tilt controls. You can precisely fly your comet between two asteroids in order to collect the items you need. The controls just feel great.
The cartoon graphics are beautifully done and really are pleasing to the eye. The sound effects are also high quality and well timed within the game. The only drawback is the lack of music or ambient noise. Some fast paced music could really make the game more exciting. Also, it would be nice to hear some sort of “swoosh†sound when the comet makes quick direction changes. There are some really great possibilities here for sound and music.
One other negative that definitely hurts this game is the lack of content. There’s only one environment to play in. The background is always the same, and there is no user customization of any kind. If anything keeps this game from becoming a success, it’ll be the limited replay value. Regardless, this is still a game that’s both fun and addicting. It’s a quality title that I strongly recommend checking out.
