SUMMARY: A classy platformer with a criminal edge.

Cops & Robbers is another game from Glu, the stable that has already brought you Build-a-lot, Deer Hunter 3D and Glyder, so my expectations for Cops & Robbers were high.

If, from the title, you are expecting a GTA clone, you are going to be disappointed. Cops & Robbers is a platform style game where the goal in each level is to get the Robber to the end of the level before you are caught by Cops. The usual platform fare is covered here with power-ups, jumps, coins and secret levels all thrown in for good measure.

Upon starting the game, a small animated movie sets the scene for the game with the premise being that you need to "earn" money to pay rent for your apartment. You then get to select from either of the two main protagonists: Rooftop, the male character, or Tic Tac, the female character. You also get to customize your character by selecting from a range of colors for your shirt, pants and shoes. None of these settings enhance your characters abilities, but does allow you to have your own style.

Starting the game launches you onto your rooftop where you can scroll though the available levels. There are nine levels in total, with only the first one being available to begin with and subsequent levels being unlocked after you've beaten the target time. Nine levels may not seem much but with each level having four challenges in total, there is some replayability here that should keep you coming back for more.

After choosing the level you wish to play, the game loads and your character immediately sets off running in an attempt to out run the cops. Acceleration and speed is set automatically with frequent opportunities to increase your boast bar each time you successfully leap a crate, barrel or chasm. You can also get an instant full speed boost thanks to an abundance of left over donuts. With speed taken care of, all that remains is to control the steering and leaping. Steering is controlled with the accelerometer, which responds pretty well most of the time. Jumping controlled via a quick tap of the screen. The controls are pretty intuitive and pretty soon you'll be running, jumping, swinging and climbing with ease.

As mentioned earlier, there is more to this game than just completing the levels in the fastest time possible. In addition to setting the best times, each level has a set amount of loot hanging around on each level to be collected. While the money is just strewn thoughout the levels as you run through them, the diamonds are hidden on each level. Spotting them is relatively easy, but accessing them, unlocking the lock and keeping hold of them is a little trickier. While you can caught by the Cops and still continue with the level from the last checkpoint, the diamond will be confiscated and returned to it's original location which means that if the last check point was after the location of the diamond, you will have to start over.

Progression through the levels consists of negotiating barrels, police barriers and crates, either by running around them or leaping over them. This includes swinging off of pipes, bouncing off of tires and climbing up and down drainpipes. As with most platform games, timing is key. With one early leap or missed timed move, you give the Cops all the excuse they need to ensure that you are busted.

Once you have beaten each level as the Robber, you unlock Cop Mode. The aim of Cop Mode is to complete the level against the ghost of your Robber with the goal of beating his time. These extra features add additional quantity to the game. The graphics are solid cartoon style with good quality sound. The ability to play the game in either landscape or portrait mode, which can be changed on the fly mid-game, is a nice touch.

Overall, Cops & Robbers is a fun platformer, that despite not having may not have the depth of other similar titles, will definitely keep you entertained.
