The most popular type of 3D game to hit the iPhone seems to be racing games. We've already reviewed Asphalt 4 and Crash Kart and found that both games are a lot of fun. Much of that fun comes from the nice graphics or the familiar characters,but with Cro-Mag Rally the enjoyment is the gameplay.
You won't know any of these characters nor will you be impressed with the graphics overall. In fact, it looks more like an N64 game then an iPhone game. But the gameplay and controls are amazing and make up for all of that. First off, you actually control your acceleration on the left side of the screen. There's even a reverse and a brake button too which make the game so much more enjoyable.
On the right side of the screen there's also a button that lets you not only select the different weapons/items that you pick up, but it also allows you to throw them. The best part about the controls hands down is how well the accelerometer responds. There's no feeling like you're moving around a marble on a board and you've gone too far to one side. When you move, the car moves. When you stop moving that way, your direction corrects itself.
So Cro-Mag Rally might not be the most beautiful looking app out there and you may have never heard of it before. But when it comes to racing games for the iPhone, this one includes everything you could need. If you'd rather have something pretty to look at, check out Asphalt 4.
