Cube is a 3D first person shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This app is clearly listed as a demo in the description left by the developers as it is a port of the PC version. Not all the bugs are worked out completely at this point, but it?s definitely an amazing first step.
When you first load up the game, make sure you?re holding your iPhone parallel to the ground with it facing up. You may need to tilt it a little bit, but holding it any other way will cause you to spin in circles and probably make you sick. You?ll notice first that there are no opponents in this game. That?s because it?s more of a deathmatch game then anything else.

Unfortunately at the time of this review we were not able to test out if local multiplayer worked.
One of the first things you?ll notice when you?re running around the level is that movig and jumping at the same time requires two buttons on the right side of the screen to be pressed at the same time. This is really awkward and makes the possibility of jumping and firing while moving even more impossible. You?ll also notice that the movement controls are way too sensitive. This is surely something that is a result of the game being nearly a direct port over to this platform.
The concept behind this game and porting it to these devices is an excellent one. When a more iPhone centric version of this app comes out, it will definitely fly up the top apps list. Unfortunately, in its current state, it?s just another app that provides you with a great example of the iPhones potential.

Some Problems, but Easily Fixed.

Cube is a first person shooter that was almost literally 'copy-and-pasted' from the PC onto the iPhone. This means several things, for starters, the first thing a person notices when they first play the game is the graphics. They are superb, and probably the best graphics the iPhone/iPod Touch can muster.

This however, almost causes the games downfall, as it often makes the game laggy and slow, especially when there are enemies on-screen. There are, however, alternative game modes that allow the player to play an almost lag-free match. Just go to menu and select the following options:

Menu>>SinglePlayer>> Start DMSP match...

Select a level afterwards, but the first level 'Map Metl3' works the best. There are hundreds of maps to choose from (literally) so you can have a very fun experience.

The music, also, is a love-hate relationship, but there are ways to disable the music while still listening to the sound effects. Go to the menu and do the following:

Menu>> Command

Then type in- /musicvol 0

Restart the game and you should be music free!

Finally the controls, probably the second biggest problem in the game. It is quite near impossible to run and jump at the same time (without practice). Fortunately, the v1.3 patch that was submitted by the author on November 24th hopes to change that, and reduce the laggy and choppy screens.

Overall, Cube is a game you should not miss out on. It is free, and if you use the options I have provided above, it should give you a seemlessly smooth, fun FPS experience on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
