Tapulous has created yet another successful version of their popular Tap Tap Revenge series for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Dave Matthews Band Revenge is beautifully done. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is smooth, and the songs are great. It's another hit.
The game starts off with the standard Tap Tap screen, offering one or two player games, an options menu, and the latest Dave Matthews Band news. The options include auto-register score, in-game arrows, online profiles, volume, and a tutorial. The tutorial is helpful, as the features in this version of Tap Tap are a bit different from the others. After selecting the player mode, you may select one of five difficulty levels which include kids, easy, medium, hard, and extreme. Extreme is not as difficult as it seems, and could have been even more challenging.
After selecting the difficulty, you are taken to the song list. The game offers ten songs from multiple Dave Matthews Band albums, but not every song is available in every difficulty. For example, in the kids difficulty level, there are only four songs available for play. The hard difficulty level offers the most songs, at eight. I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and I must say, the song selection for this game is great. It offers older songs such as Ants Marching and newer songs such as Funny The Way It Is from the latest album. Even though there are ten great songs here, I would like to see more. Or, at least have the option to download more songs. I do not see this option in the game and hope it will become available in an update.
The actual game screen resembles a sort of pinball game. The round spheres look like actual silver pinballs. The background is the album art from the album of the current song. The top center of the screen shows your current score while the top right shows your current streak compared to your best. There are light bulbs along the edges of the play area which will light up as you increase your streak, hitting the spheres perfectly as you play. When the bulbs light up and reach the top of the screen, the option to "Shake for Revenge" will appear. If you can manage to shake your device while playing without missing a sphere, the lights will start to blink all over, the spheres start to glow, and more bonuses will be earned. Shaking your device in the middle of a fast song with many spheres becomes very difficult to accomplish. As soon as you miss a sphere the light bulbs turn off and you have to start your streak again.
After each song, you are given your total score, hit percentage, and streak statistics.
At this same screen you may also check out the leader board, challenge a friend, check out the Dave Matthews Band website, and buy the track you played on iTunes. These options are actually really interesting. You can visit the Dave Mattews Band website inside the app. It doesn't quit and bring you to Safari. You can read news, tour dates, etc. Being a fan, I really like this feature. When you click on "Buy This Track", the app quits and takes you to the iTunes app to purchase the track, or entire album.
This game is just as great as every other Tap Tap Revenge game that Tapulous puts out. The graphics are amazing. They are bright, colorful, and pleasing to the eye. It isn't as flashy as Tap Tap Revenge 2, but it's still a gorgeous application. The flashing lights on the side add a sort of pinball or carnival feel to the game, which is a nice and welcome change.
The gameplay is not perfect, but very close. Even when you restart your device and turn on airplane mode, you do get a slight lag when playing. This slight lag does get annoying at times, when the spheres don't seem to line up with the music exactly. But, this is a minor flaw which I'm sure will be fixed with an update. The gameplay includes holding down certain spheres while tapping others at the same time. It also includes flicking the device left, right, and back. These are all done well in the app.
There is really not much to complain about this game. It's fun, addicting, and beautiful. I only wish there were more songs or an option to download more songs. The lack of songs takes away from the app's replayability. But, if you are a fan of Tap Tap Revenge, you'll get this app anyway, just to collect each new version. If you are a fan of Dave Matthews Band, you'll get this app anyway, just because you love Dave Matthews Band. If you're neither, then you should check out the app anyway! You will not be disappointed. It's quality is worth every penny.
