Doom. Hailed as one of the initial startup games for the FPS. The series has been around for a while and we've seen different iterations come and go from the development team. Now the iPhone version has made its way to the appstore and man is it really a work of art, in my humble opinion. The frachise has created a new chapter in the Doom legacy called Doom Resurrection. The game is a first person shooter with everything one would want from the genre: guns, zombies, and smooth controls. This is FPS on the iPhone done right.
The controls are pretty straight forward with the aiming done by tilting.
Now before any of you go on a rampage, the aiming is actually pretty simple and feels extremely natural. The only real difference between other games is that all of the walking is done by the app itself, so it feels and plays just like an arcade zombie game. The graphics in the game look wonderful and the game itself ran extremely smooth on my phone. With the choice of different high-powered weapons and plenty of different monsters and bosses to shoot, Doom Resurrection makes for a fun game on the iPhone. The only large issue that I had with the game is that the gameplay seems to move along really slow. It ended up being a little too easy as the turning and zombies walked slowly over to me allowing me to pick them off with ease.
Hardcore fans of the series may be a little disappointed that they do not have control over the movement of the character, but if you look at it as a game made exclusively to work wonderfully on the iPhone, I'm sure you will understand why they made that choice. It weighs in with a heavy price, but the game is masterfully produced. Check it out.
