Drink Tracker Breathalyzer is an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that helps you determine your blood alcohol content. If you're a drinker and want to play it safe, then this app is for you.
Drink Tracker actually takes some time to set up before it becomes useful. You'll need to create a profile, including your gender, age, height and weight so the app can accurately calculate your blood alcohol content based on how many drinks you've consumed. The height and weight units can be changed to metric, imperial or US. But, after changing it to US, I encountered a bug where the system did not register the change. After tapping a few buttons and going between a few pages, it finally did change to centimeters and inches. You can also set a target BAC to alert you when you've drank too much.
Once you've set up your profile, you can start drinking! When you start a session, you're BAC is clearly displayed with additional information including drinks consumed, time elapsed, BAC target and time to target. So, you'll actually know how long you have left before you've reached your target BAC. From this page you can see details about your drinking session, add a drink to consume, end your session or find a way to get home. When you add a drink you are provided with a list of default drinks to choose from. This list can be modified to add your own favorite drinks. After selecting a drink you can choose to "drink now" or if you've forgotten, you can set it to have already been drunk at whatever time you choose. When you're done drinking, you can hit the "Outta Here!" button to bring up several options for finding your way home. You can choose your current location and a destination, then select your mode of travel. You can find a nearby taxi service or get walking, bus or driving directions. However, each of these options will quit the app entirely and bring up your device's default maps application. You can also call, text or email, but they also quit the app entirely.
Drink Tracker Breathalyzer works as described, but my problem with the app is practicality. How practical is it for someone to take their phone out at a party or bar each time they take a drink? Would you remember to open up the application while you're having fun with your friends? For those out there are determined to track their alcohol consumption, this app provides it. However, don’t expect to use it half-heartedly. This app really is all or nothing in terms of functionality. The one bright spot for the casual user is the "Outta Here!" feature, helping you to find your way home or get a taxi.
