Internet radio apps for the iPhone seem to be one of the best ways to listen to new music on the go besides using Pandora. While there are plenty of internet radio apps out there, having different ones to choose from allows you to sometimes find new stations. FlyCast brings all of the Shoutcast radio stations to the iPhone along with a few extra features that make it fairly interesting.
First off, you have access to over 25,000 stations from the Shoutcase directory. This should keep you pretty busy for awhile. Creating an account with FlyCast allows you to save your favorite stations on your iPhone and view them on your computer, or vice versa. This is pretty handy if you decide you want to listen to that station elsewhere.
The ability to catch some local stations on FlyCast is very handy as well, but none of them are actual radio stations like we've seen in other apps like this.
The most interesting feature in FlyCast is the buffering capabilities. When you load up a station, especially on WiFi, it starts buffering like crazy. It doesn't take long for you to have 10 full minutes of buffering time which means that if you pop in and out of WiFi coverage or when you're switching between 3G and EDGE in your car. Not all the internet radio apps offer this, so you'll definitely enjoy listening to the Shoutcast stations on your iPhone a lot more than before.
FlyCast doesn't bring a lot new to the table and the fact of the matter is that it doesn't really have to. The buffering is enough to make this a useful app, but the lack of true localized radio lets it fall a little bit short. If you don't already have an internet radio app and you're looking to get into it, then give FlyCast a chance. It might be exactly what you're looking for.
