Games » Force Archer Review

Force Archer is a turn-based archery game, akin to Scorched Earth or other games where you choose an angle and a force to fire a projectile at a target.

That's pretty much all Force Archer is. You stand a ways from a second archer and lob arrows at each other. Sometimes your opponent is farther away or closer and sometimes your opponent is higher or lower. There's also wind that affects your arrows.

Hitting different body parts on your opponent does different amounts of damage. Cursing, burning, or icing your arrows do different amounts of damage also (but also use magic). A head shot does a lot more damage than any other body part. Often it's an instant kill.

The graphics for this game are meant to look spiffy, but end up being really simple. There isn't a lot of interesting detail you can put into two archers and some gap (field or hole) between them.

When you first start out, you can only choose a female archer. Once you finish about 4 Levels of Round 1, you unlock the second archer: the green Golem archer (featured in the icon).

I never made it past Round 2, so I don't know who the other two characters are. The app description says one is a skeleton and the other is Mercury (the god from Greek mythology).

To aim, you drag the tip of the bow up or down (and it tells you the degree so you can remember it next time). To control the force of your shot, you hold down the fire button and let go when the slider is where you want it to be.

The trick to these types of games is adjusting your angle and force to get a perfect shot as often as possible. Force archer makes this extremely difficult by not showing you the previous angle on your next turn. Combine that with missing the fire button and it's quite difficult to redo the same shot. I guess that's the challenge of the game.

If you use some magic to light your arrow on fire or freeze/green ooze it, it will do more damage when you hit your opponent. You can also use your turn healing yourself. Since the most likely reason I would lose a level was a head shot, healing didn't really help me.

If you want to try the game without paying $0.99 for it, install the lite version. In it, you only get to play the female archer.

If they changed the shot interface to allow for adjustments to the last shot and made the terrain a little more interesting, this game might actually be fun. Until then it's an exercise in frustration and I don't recommend it.
