Utilities » GoSatWatch Review

GoSatWatch is a satellite tracking application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. With this app you can view where man-made satellites and space shuttles are in the nighttime sky.
When you first start the app, you will be given a complete flattened version of the earth, as well the trajectory of the satellites you are tracking, which is represented by the yellow line. If your location can be determined, whether by GPS for the iPhone or by Skyhook (location via WiFi hotspots) for the iPod Touch, your geological location will be represented by the “eye” on the map. The bar under the arrows is where information about the selected satellite is listed, such as: latitude, longitude, altitude, and velocity. Tapping the clock in the upper right-hand corner will allow you to fast forward through time to view the satellite on its orbit.
Tapping the “Sky” option will show you what you can see in the sky at your location; Though this may not be what it actually is, as there are no instructions available for me to confirm with. Tapping the “Passes” option will allow you to see when a satellite you are tracking will be passing in your area.

Tapping the “Satellites” option on the toolbar will allow you to configure which satellites you would like to track; ranging anywhere from Space Shuttles to a discarded tool-bag that has remained in orbit. Tapping the “Settings” option is where you can configure how the map displays the information, such as using the metric system in place of the imperial system.
Though this app may do what it says very well, there is no practical use for it unless tracking satellites is your profession. I had two major issues while I was reviewing this application. One problem is that I constantly received a “Low Memory” warning while using this app, even after restarting my phone. The other problem is that the developers assume that you know what you are looking at when you use this application. This is frustrating to say the least, as most developers include some form of introduction. Unless you are an astronomer, or someone who requires mobile satellite tracking as a part of their profession, I recommend passing on this app; It is simply too expensive and no introduction is given to those who are unfamiliar with these types of services.
