Games » Guinness World Records Review

Guinness World Records is one of the most fun and addicting games I've played on the iPhone so far. The concept is simple; you travel the globe, playing a bunch of mini games in hopes of breaking world records. The app is clean and polished with minimal issues, making it a pleasure to play around with.

The game begins with the choosing and customization of your character. You can change facial features and clothing to make the character look as much like you as possible. There are tons of different options to choose from and some actually have to be purchased with the money you make from winning mini games. You can create up to four unique characters on one device, making it a great multiplayer application.

After you choose your character you are brought to a globe where you can touch your finger to the screen to walk around and choose a mini game to play. When you reach a landmark, three mini games pop up to choose from. There are 36 mini games total to choose from and each one offers a unique method of play. For example, in one game you have to sheer five sheep as fast as you can. To do that, you have to tap on the buzzer and slide your finger up and down over the sheep as fast as you can to get the best time. In another game you have to balance a car on your head by titling the iPhone or iPod Touch back and forth. So, the game definitely takes full advantage of the device's functionality.

The mini games are so addicting, not only because they are simple and fun, but because you'll want to keep playing it over and over again to beat your previous score or time. At the end of each game you earn points based on your performance. You can use these points to unlock more complex mini games. You can compete against your own score, the scores of other players on the same device, regional scores in your state, national scores and world records. When you sign up for a GameSpy account, your score is compared with people from around the world. What's really neat about this is that the "Video Game Score" event is real and if you're good enough you can you can actually become a Guinness World Record holder.

That's insane!

The app is near perfection in terms of gameplay and quality. One issue I have is with the touch controls. Sometimes during a game, the app won't register my touch correctly. In one mini game you have to touch, hold and move blocks to build floors of a building. Sometimes the app will drop my block even though I'm still touching the device with my finger. Also, my biggest issue is with time between mini games. Whenever you finish or lose a mini game, you are taken back to the score screen that shows whether or not you beat certain records. This load time in between games gets a bit frustrating when you really want to keep trying to beat your score. You can pause and restart, but there is no quick way to keep playing the same mini game over and over again.

The graphics and animations in the game are cartoonish but nicely done, in 3D. The music is actually fun to listen to and the sound effects are integrated well into each mini game. There were a few minor hiccups during games where many things were happening at the same time, but it really didn't detract too much from the gameplay.

Guinness World Records is a breath of fresh air in the app store today. The game is easy enough for children to have fun with, but competitive enough for the hardcore gamer who strives to get the highest score possible. With the integration of online scoring, the app will have you playing for hours trying to beat high scores from around the world. You can also have fun with family and friends right in the same room by taking turns beating each other's scores using the multiplayer function. I highly recommend purchasing this game. You won't regret it.
