Hotfield is an arcade 2D shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. We've all played one of these game and Hotfield is looking to bring the genre to the iphone. This is the kind of game where you fly around shooting enemies and gaining powerups until you get to the final boss that shoots crazy patterns and takes a day just to take down. That sums up Hotfield.
Getting right into the game, you are asked to select from three vehicles, each with their own type of fire. After selecting that, you select your difficulty and get thrown right into the action. There are three things you can do with your craft. You can move, fire a large laser and slow time. Each is handles with, you guessed it, tapping. The player moves with their finger with the vehicle following the pattern your finger traces on the screen. I found this to be a bit cumbersome as the ship moves slower than you do forcing you to move slow. To fire the laser, the player simply adds another finger onto the screen and releases once it's charged for maximum power. Double tapping the screen will slow time until the player releases or the gauge runs out.
Overall, Hotfield provides that crazy ammo dodging gameplay that can be found in many older style games and will not disappoint too much. I did find the game slowing down a bit occasionally, but it didn't throw off my gameplay too much. For the price it's listed in the app store, it is a toss-up. The game is fun, but if that's not your cup of tea, you may want to pass.
