Most apps in the appstore are games that trying to take advantage of the unique control scheme offered by the iPhone and iPod Touch. There are also apps that look to bring mobility to popular mediums and give users information or entertainment with the swipe of a finger. But every so often a developer looks to accomplish one goal with their app: To bring an artistic idea to fruition using the processing power and uniqueness of the iPhone.

iBonsai is one of those apps. The app has seemingly no purpose at all but to calmly present a form of art known as bonsai or the art of making miniature trees. The app generates one hundred percent unique trees with each go, offering different colors of leaves and even fruit if left long enough to grow. The app draws the tree randomly with the Japanese sumi-e style of brush painting. If you are wondering if that really is all this app does...

you are completely right. It does however have a few possible interactions. In the app you can shake the device to remove some of the leaves and while it is growing, you can hold your finger to repel the branches away from it. That's about it when it comes to this app.

It is retailing for a really cheap price, but that still didn't entice me enough to put any value on this app. It is a wonderful expression of art, but I think it would work much better as a screensaver than an app to be watched on an iPhone. That's just my personal opinion and for the cheap price, maybe some of you will find more value in it than I did. Check it out and let me know what you think.
