Government news applications are nothing new to the app store. There are plenty of apps that offer news regarding the Whitehouse and politics in general. However, no other app offers as much depth as iGovernment does. This application not only covers the Whitehouse, but also the House of Representatives, Senate, Supreme Court, Federal Courts, NASA, Department of Defense, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, State Department, Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of Labor, Department of Energy, Treasury and the Department of Health and Human Services. That’s an incredible amount of content for one application.
The main page offers a summary of the top news stories of the day. You can read a brief summary of each story, or you can tap on one to read the full article. If an article is of particular interest to you, you can share it with friends and family via email or Twitter. Hopefully the developer will add Facebook support in the future.
The beauty of this app is that you aren’t forced to read the general news topics that may or may not interest you. If you are really into NASA, you can choose to read only the latest news about NASA. To make it even better, you can customize the icons at the bottom of the page, so you can have quick and easy access to up to four of your favorite government departments.
There are also sections dedicated to photos and videos. While the video section worked well, I did have some problems with the photos. Every time I tapped on a photo, my iPhone crashed. I’m hoping this is just a simple bug that can be fixed in the next update.
Overall, iGovernment is a fantastic news app for anyone who’s interested in the many areas of our government. I see this app really succeeding because it appeals to so many different types of people. There are just a few features I’d love to see added in the future. There really needs to be a way to save articles for offline viewing. Adding Instapaper support would be a big plus. Also, currently you can only view articles and photos in portrait mode. Landscape mode would be a welcome addition. Even without these features, iGovernment is definitely worth checking out if you are even remotely interested in any of the areas it covers.
