iLodeRunner harkens back to the Apple II days. The goal of the game is to collect all the coins on each level and evade the cops. Ladders let you climb between platforms and you can also shimmy along pipes. After you've collected all the coins, a new ladder appears that lets you climb to the next level.
You can evade cops by climbing up ladders and dropping down on the other side of them or by digging a hole and either letting them fall in or falling through yourself. You can only dig a hole in the square to your left or right, not directly below you. If you dig a hole in a platform and it has no bottom, you will be able to fall through but cops will get stuck.
This game is all about timing. If you dig a hole too late, a cop will interrupt you and your hole won't be complete. Holes fill in after a short period of time; if a cop is in the hole, they will "respawn" near the top of the screen; if your player is in the hole, he dies and you have to restart the level.
There are two methods of controlling your player: accelerometer or touch. The accelerometer method requires you to tip the device to change directions and tap the left and right sides to dig. The touch method lets you touch the four directions and then swipe down on the left or right to dig. I found the accelerometer too difficult to quickly change directions precisely and ended up using the touch method most of the time.
One complaint I have about the touch interface is you're likely to hit the Menu button when you want to go down.
The levels have been faithfully recreated and the game acts just like it did on the old Apple.
One feature that was included in newer versions but not the Apple II one is flashing cops. Cops can pick up coins and will drop them on two occasions: randomly and when they fall into a hole. In later versions, cops that have coins flash so you can easily find them and trick them into a hole. In this version, you just have to guess which cops have coins.
Other features include a high score list, a level selector, and game speed controls. They also say a level editor is coming soon, so if you get tired of the 150 levels that already exist, you'll be able to create your own to challenge your friends.
In short, this game is great for those people who remember the original Lode Runner or are looking for a challenge.
This game is being renamed to MineRunner.
