imeem mobile is an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to stream your own personal library wherever you may be. In order for you to begin using this application you must first create an imeem.com account, which can be done by tapping the "Create Account" option when you first start the app. If you already have an account, or when you are done creating one, you sign in by tapping the "Login" option.
After logging in, you are taken to the featured stations menu. Here you can listen to stations that contain new and notable artists, the Top 100 songs of the week, Urb's Top 100 artists of the year, or those catchy tunes from the Apple commercials. Tapping on a station will begin playing the music. With the song title and artist name at the top, the album artwork in the center, and the bottom bar containing Love and Block buttons, this app is laid out very similar to Pandora, or Last.fm. The bar under the song information tells you not only how far you are into a song, but how much of the song is loaded, which I found unique to this app. Tapping the blue circle with an "i" in it will give you a brief biography of the artist currently playing. Under the album artwork you are given the ability to block, favorite, pause, or skip a song. Tapping the center "Menu" button will allow you to buy the current song off of iTunes, email the complete song to a friend, Favorite a song, or favorite the artist. Like other internet radio apps, you are only allowed to skip 6 songs in an hour when listening to playlists or stations.
Tapping the "MyMusic" option on the main toolbar is where imeem Mobile truly shines as a music streaming service. If you have uploaded any music from your computer onto imeem, here is where you can browse and play them. This is useful in so many different ways, as it saves memory on your device. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out how many songs could be uploaded to the service for this review, but even the ability to upload and stream your own music is awesome in itself. While listening to your own music, the only change to the interface is that the "Block" button is now a "Previous Track" button.
Tapping the Favorites icon on the main toolbar will allow you to listen to your favorite music as well as music that imeem.com finds similar. The "search" option on the toolbar does what you think it does: you can search for artists or songs that you want to listen to.
This app isn't geared towards discovering new music, but rather listening to your own music. The quality while streaming is excellent, with little to no stuttering. Listening to music on EDGE was perfect, with the only noticeable difference being that it took longer to begin a song. I don't know if choppiness could increase as cellphone signal is lowered, because I had full bars while I was reviewing. I only encountered one bug: I paused a song while it was loading, but the song began to play anyway. Another minor setback is the sharing option; Instead of directing to the email app, you have to type in the email address of the person you want to share with manually. Considering that you can play your own music, combined with the fact that this app is free, it is a must have for anyone and everyone. Download this app today, you won't be disappointed.
