IMP: Surf the Music is a game that will have you surfing along a track collecting beat-triggering crystals and grooving to some funky music. When it comes to iPhone games, it’s very original, but it still has its issues.

Let’s get to what the game’s all about. The music. There are seven environments in the app, each with two different mixes of a song to choose from. All tracks are loaded with drums, bass, and guitar, along with some groovy synthesizer riffs and bongo beats. It’s generally catchy and fun, but tends to get repetitive and sometimes just plain boring.

The app looks very nice, though. Each level will have you on an ever-changing track with various different funky backgrounds. Your surroundings range from the beach to a winter wonderland and even to funkin’ hot hell. Your funny-looking character also dances back and forth and jumps around, which always gives me a better feel for the music.

As expected, tilt controls are implemented into Surf the Music. There’s no better way to feel the music than to actually tilt and turn along to it. The one problem with this is that to me it doesn’t seem sensitive enough and there is currently no option to change the sensitivity of the tilt.

If you enjoy games that incorporate musical game-play, then pick this one up. It looks eerily similar to Tapulous’ upcoming Riddim Ribbon (I’m looking forward to seeing what that brings to the table). As for now, I’d say this definitely brings originality and some unique gameplay to the App Store. With new songs and levels being promised in future updates, this is a neat app to try out.
