Mailtones is the answer to one of the most requested features as far as iPhone settings go. With the introduction of push notifications, apps now have the ability to send alerts and sounds. Developers saw an opportunity and created Mailtones, an app that gives you customization over the new mail notification sound on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The app works like a charm and is very simple to set up. The user just forwards their email to a custom address (they could just forward specific email too) that mailtones provides. Once this is setup, the user can then get to customizing. Any contacts that have email addresses can be chosen in the app to have a sound individual to them. The app can also monitor the subject of the email and you can customize the sound based off of that.

The sounds that are available in the app are pretty decent with classic windows sounds and the occasional animal noise too. One thing that I appreciated was how loud the sounds were, it definitely gets my attention better. There is no feature to create and import your own sounds which would have put this app over the top into the NEED TO BUY category, but overall it is giving a lot of great customization features that Apple should definitely be picking up the slack on.

The app is being offered for a very fair price considering what it's offering so I definitely recommend checking it out. Just remember that you are forwarding your email to another server that you don't have access to.
