TUAW is an application that brings The Unofficial Apple Weblog website to your iPhone or iPod Touch. With this app, you can easily stay on top of the latest Apple news and rumors. It is both intuitive and functional with only a few minor bugs to complain about.
The main page displays the latest Apple news that has been posted to TUAW. The site regularly posts new material and the app updates automatically. Tapping on an article will bring up a new page to read, save or share. Reading an article is a smooth experience, allowing you to pinch, zoom and view pictures and video right from in the app. You can also save the article, including images, for offline viewing. There is a separate section to view all of your saved articles. This feature is great for when you don’t have enough time to read the entire article and know that you can’t get a signal where you’re going. If you find an article interesting enough, you can share it via email, Facebook or Twitter. This integration works very well.
There is much more to this application that just reading the latest Apple news. The top of the main screen contains a scroll bar to navigate through different categories such as rumors, accessories and app reviews.
These categories may contain duplicate articles that are already viewable in the “Latest” section. But, it’s very convenient to have the option to filter through the content by category. One of the strongest categories is “rumors.” TUAW has been known to stay on top of the latest Apple rumors, and this app will definitely keep you in the loop.
Another great feature is the photo gallery. Here, you can view Apple-related photos arranged by event. For example, you can view photos from the Macworld Expo 2009, or random photos of fun and interesting Apple content. Photos can be viewed in portrait or landscape mode, and can be shared via email. Speaking of landscape mode, the app only allows you to read articles in portrait mode. Landscape mode is definitely a standard in RSS readers and this app should be no different. I’m sure this will be added in the next update.
TUAW is definitely a huge improvement over the mobile version of the website. The app is easier to navigate, more intuitive and contains much more content than the mobile site. With the exception of a few missing features and a couple of crashes, it’s a great application that I strongly recommend downloading.
