Johnny Crash brings death-defying, cunning stunts to the iPhone, but does it crash spectacularly into the App Store or simply limp in through the back door?
The premise of Johnny Crash is to launch JC via the power of the cannon and then fly him as far as you can while completing a given stunt. These stunts all comprise of crashing into given items, from seagulls, kites and helicopters to parachutes, steers and aliens and if you can fly as far as possible before careering into any of these items then the bigger your score. The reward for completing each stunt is to unlock the next level, while flying further and beating the target score will grant you 'Expert' status.
Launching JC from the cannon, at the right angle of course, is via a swift tap onto the touchscreen and the same method can be used to flap JC's arms and gain a small amount of flight.
JC's powers aren't limit-less though and with each flap of his arms his energy will decrease and while this can be replenished by flying through a lightening cloud it will soon run out and have you crashing to earth, so keeping an eye on your energy reserves is vital to achieve all of the goals. The flapping of JC's arms can also be achieved by tilting the iPhone/iPod Touch, however I found this pretty unresponsive so I stuck with the touchscreen option instead.
Completing the 24 levels can be achieved in as short as 1 hour and that's what lets this game down. At a price point of $2.99 I expect not only a game that will take me a while to play through but also re-playability and Johnny Crash doesn't deliver in either. There is no online mode or even online scoreboard and while there is a multi-player option using a single iPhone/iPod Touch and passing it between the players this in unlikely to keep you coming back for more.
What Johnny Crash does it does well, the graphics look good, the sound is effective and even the controls make flying Johnny Crash a breeze, unfortunately unless extra levels are added with future updates your $2.99 isn't going to get you much bang for your buck.
