Joost is a video gateway app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The best way to describe this app is a smaller YouTube app for your device. While the app does offer quite a bit of media for you to browse through, you can?t view it as an alternative to YouTube.
Before you load up the app, make sure you have WiFi enabled. Instead of scaling the video quality depending on your connection, this app only works on WiFi. Depending on where you?re located, Joost offers up over 46,000 videos for you to watch. To make things easier to find videos that you?re interest in seeing, there are four different tabs for you to use. Those tabs are: Joost Picks, Popular, Browse, and Search. Joost Picks is a one page listing of whatever the Joost staff has decided should be seen on their app. Popular lists out multiple pages of the top videos ranked my popularity.
Browse and Search make the app a lot easier to find more specific videos. Browse gives you three categories: Film, Music, and Shows. Within each category there are even more subsections for you to select so that you?re only looking through exactly what you want to see. Search lets you enter in any keyword or phrase you?d like to find and pulls up a listing of all relevant videos. When you?re ready to watch the video, tap on it and turn your device to landscape mode. Joost offers the same controls that you?re use to seeing with the YouTube app so you shouldn?t run into any issues when it comes to figuring out how to handle it.
It?s interesting to see another video service app on the iPhone and iPod Touch. With the level of integration that YouTube has with the device through nearly every app that uses video, it?s hard for Joost to really capture the attention of that audience. The video quality is great and you may find videos that you wouldn?t have otherwise found on YouTube. Considering it?s free, definitely download this app and check it out.
