Looking for that almost arcade perfect recreation of Arkanoid or Breakout for your old school home system? Then look no further than Krypton Egg. This new game released from Chilingo Ltd, and developed by DotEmu is probably the closest thing that I have played to those games from back in the day. This game offers 70+ levels of non-stop brick breaking enjoyment.
One of the first things you will notice is that the graphics are almost identical in the style and feel of the arcade game it is modeled after. The music also creates that feel of being in a dingy arcade hunched over the cabinet, eyes wide, scanning for the next place you can hit your ball into. I loved the way this game is presented in that old school feel.
The controls are pretty tight as well. You play most of the time by using your finger to slide the bumper across the bottom of the screen. This method is very easy to get the hang of. You can also change the controls to "Tilt" and use the built in accelerometer to move back and forth.
However I found this much harder to control even after tweaking the sensitivity. The random enemies that move around the screen and deflect your ball keep your finger frantically moving at an almost constant pace.
There are thirty some items to collect during play. There are "Bonuses", like ball multipliers, and "Special Effects" which only power-up your bumper, sometimes making it wider to hit balls easier, or sticky so you can call your shots. But along with the collectables, there are also objects to avoid, called ?Penalties?. These cause obstacles in your game performance, like making the screen go black for a couple seconds, or freezing the bumper in one spot. My only real gripe with this game is because of these ?Penalty? pick-ups. I found it really hard to distinguish between the good and the bad ones in the fraction of time they are on the screen.
Getting into the game was easy and felt familiar. There is no story to bog you down in a needless plot, just bricks to break and fun to have. All in all this is one game that could have a high replayability if you are into this type of game as the levels vary wildly as you go from stage to stage and the pick-ups are always random. At only 99 cents, this game shouldn?t be missed.
