The concept for Little Red Sled may turn some off at first. You control a little boy or girl riding a sled, trying to grab tightly wrapped presents from the snow, hopping up snow drifts and hand built ramps, all the while avoiding cute little rabbits and frost covered pines. But don?t judge too harshly this saccharine sweet premise; Little Red Sled actually ends up being a solid and intense racing game. You and your tilt-controlled sled only have three main objectives: Race against time, collect all the gifts, and attain a certain amount of points. These vary between levels, and occasionally it tasks you with completing all three simultaneously. This can make the goals challenging, but usually you are able to beat the level before getting too frustrated. The game itself is all 3D, with great models and near perfect frame rates. The load times are pretty good, especially considering the depth of the maps and models.
While the simplicity ultimately adds to the fun of picking up and playing this game, at times it seems like wasted opportunity. For instance, throughout the levels there are ramps scattered about, from which you can propel yourself in the air to collect floating presents and to perform point-gaining tricks. But these ?tricks? are actually just one trick that you can repeat as many times as your jump height allows. Likewise on the power-ups; the two available as of right now are limited and unimaginative. Invincibility simply allows you to smack into obstacles without repercussion, while higher jumps give you more airtime from the ramps, thereby getting more points, and bringing you closer to your goal. How ever tacked on these elements may feel though, the real fun from this game comes from speeding down its treacherous slopes, and the simple addictive adrenaline rush it provides.
There are a decent amount of levels, and this game will have you coming back until you finally beat it. There are three different difficulty levels, Green Circle, Blue Square, and Black Diamond. The game also claims to have different skill levels, but I witnessed no changes from switching between them. As of right now, there is only a story mode, and the chances that you will play it after you beat all the levels are not great.
Overall, Little Red Sled is a great, simplistic game, but the lack of replay value and the basic gameplay may leave some wanting. At the very reasonable price of $1.99, I say give it a shot.
