Utilities » Live Cams Review

Live Cams is an application for the iPhone & iPod Touch that allows you to view live webcam feeds from around the world. Not only can you view the live video, but you can control the camera's viewpoint by panning, tilting and zooming. While the concept is great, the app isn't as exciting as it sounds.

The app opens up with a list of public cameras ready for viewing. They are listed in categories such as animals, beaches, and popular. Once you tap on a category you are presented with a set of six cameras to choose from. You can view more by swiping to the left. Tapping on a specific camera feed brings it up full screen with some options available. From this screen you can use the arrows to go back and forth between cameras, hit the random button to get a random video feed or hit the refresh button. If you're on a cell network instead of Wifi, your feeds become images and automatically refresh. But, even when you're on Wifi, the video feed isn't 100% smooth.

There is always some delay, whether it be a half second or two seconds.

Not all of the feeds allow you to control the camera, but when you are able to, the controls really work well. When you pan, tilt or zoom, it does take a second or two to actually respond, but when they do respond, they get to your desired location quickly. When you zoom in the picture is just as clear as when it was zoomed out. It's definitely fun to play around with.

The app also allows you to add your own webcam to view. It supports a variety of cameras which are all listed in the iTunes description. I used my Mac's iSight camera and after a little bit of setup time, it worked really well. I was able to view my office right from my iPhone. The only catch here is that you have to download a third party application call EvoCam which only allows a fifteen day trial before you have to pay.

Overall, Live Cams does what it says it does. You can view public webcams from around the world on your iPhone. This in itself is great at first, but isn't something you'll keep on your device forever, unless you plan on using it with your own webcam. But, for the price, it's definitely worth checking out.
