In Major Warhead, your objective is to defend a military base from wave after wave of enemy attacks. The game offers simple controls, great music, solid 2D graphics, funny sound effects and addicting gameplay. However, with only one map, it lacks in content.
All you have in your arsenal to defend your base with are two artillery guns and an Apache chopper, neither of which are upgradeable. Your base consists of several buildings that must be protected from enemy attacks. There are one hundred waves of enemies to defend against in order to beat the game, and each wave gets progressively harder. The first few waves only send over soldiers on foot. But, as the game goes on, new units will start to appear such as suicide bombers, jeeps and tanks.
Your artillery guns are powerful, but slow. All you have to do is tap on an area of the map to attack. However, there is a slight delay from the time you tap until the artillery actually launches. So, you’ll need to attack an area just ahead of where the enemy units are traveling. The Apache chopper is much quicker to attack with than the artillery. You can tap and hold on the chopper and drag your finger around to move. The chopper has an attack radius and any enemy units in that radius will automatically be fired upon. The chopper is very useful, but must take evasive action when the soldiers start to attack with surface-to-air weapons. If your chopper gets hit and crashes, you’ll have to wait several seconds before it appears again, leaving your base vulnerable to attack. As your base becomes damaged, you can use the “war funds” you’ve earned to repair the buildings.

Again, the controls are very straightforward and work well for this style of game. One small gripe I have is with the artillery. There is no way to tell exactly where you tapped on the screen to launch your attack. It would be nice to have some sort of crosshair-type reference to indicate where you are aiming your artillery. Also, maybe there could be an audio confirmation as well to confirm that you have actually selected a target or area. While playing, you’ll just never feel sure that you actually ordered the artillery to fire at a specific location.
Major Warhead is absolutely a fun and addicting game. The graphics and audio are both done very well. You’ll be in awe at how much blood covers the ground as you play through each wave. The major problem has to do with the lack of game content for replay value. There is currently only one map and two weapons to fight with. The developer has promised one additional map, more weapons, new enemies and new gameplay modes. With this extra content, the game will definitely be a winner. I’m sure the developer will follow through with these updates. However, as it stands at the time of this review, I must take into account the lack of content. Regardless, the game is still fun. If you’re into the whole defense genre then I strongly recommend checking this one out.
