Mass Effect was an indepth RPG/action game released for consoles that took the genre to new heights with it's story driven gameplay focusing on conversation as well as gunfights. Expanding the franchise even further, Bioware has now released an iPhone game featuring an all new story and gameplay dependent on the unique technologies Apple's devices have to offer. The game follows the story of a retired soldier named Jacob who is thrown into a conflict of races while on vacation. You assume the role of Jacob as he tries to restore peace to the galaxy through both negotiation and firefights.
The game is basically comprised of two parts, conversation and combat. Conversation first happens with different people as your character progresses through the story. Players have the choice of what to say though it mostly will not make too much of a difference. After wading through dialogue scenes, the player will then enter a combat mode which, as far as I'm concerned, is the downfall of this game.
The game has players tilting their device to move through a birdseye view of the battle. Firing is handled automatically and players must press different buttons to fire special abilities. The problem with this combat system is that it really does not provide much variety at all. Almost every battle I played through felt exactly the same as the previous and ruined the feel of the game.
To sum the game up, Mass Effect Galaxy has a great story and with some excellent art. But the gameplay is way too mundane and only hardcore fans will find much value in it. If you want a fix of some great scifi fiction, this game is great for that. Just don't expect it to act like a game and be fun.
