The Need For Speed series is top dog when it comes to fun, arcade racing on the most popular consoles today and now EA has released a version for the iPhone and Ipod Touch that looks to dominate mobile racing. Need For Speed Undercover features everything hardcore racers would expect from a racing game. It has a shop where new cars can be bought, an excellent steering system and some great looking graphics. Right from the get go, player will be introduced to the storyline. You are an undercover driver who basically needs to race your way to victory. Go figure.
The controls are simple. Tapping on the screen breaks the car which is automatically accelerated by the game. Swiping up once will activate your nitro and give you that extra boost you may need. Swiping down on the screen will activate a kind of slow motion feature that will help you in sticky situations. Unlike most racing games and other tilt games, Need for Speed keeps the horizon stable and keeps the player from having to tilt their head to keep up with the action. This is an excellent feature that really boosted the game's replayability as my neck never got sore. The upgrades work pretty simply, the player has the choice to buy a car and then upgrade it based on different levels. The system worked fine but I found I could almost fully upgrade my car after the first race, taking away from the challenge of earning enough.
Overall, Need for Speed is the best racing game on the iPhone to date and will hold that title for a while with its excellent graphics and controls. It is the perfect addition to any racing fan's collection and could even be called one of the first games on the iPhone that caters to more hardcore gaming fans. Check it out.
