PIG – Party Idea Generator is an application that offers ideas to make your parties better. It’s not only an idea generator, but also an idea organizer, as you can type in your own ideas to refer to when necessary. Even though it does not declare a specific demographic, the music and user interface seem to suggest that this app is geared toward the typical college frat house.
The app opens up with a fun UI that resembles some sort of utility control panel for a machine where you would put some items into, hit start and see what comes out the other end. In this case, you’re putting in aspects of a party that you need help with and seeing what type of ideas the app has to offer. Tapping on the start button will take you to a wheel with several party elements to choose from such as drinks, food, dancing, etc. You can spin the wheel for a random selection or manually choose which item you need an idea for. It’s worth mentioning that the wheel’s spin physics do not function properly. It seems buggy and does not respond to the forcefulness of your finger swipe. You can also type in your own item that isn’t on the wheel. Once a category is selected, you can tap on the “GO†button, which will drop a colored ball into the pipe and into the next area, although this area seems like a waste of time to me. All this screen is for is to choose whether you’d like more of that certain item, or less. For example, if the category were dancing, the “more†lever would provide ideas that make dancing a focus of the party, while the “less†lever will offer ideas that limit the amount of dancing at the party. This could have been selected on the first screen instead. But, I understand the developer’s attempt to make the app more fun by having the ball travel through the pipes.
Once you’ve hit the “GO†button again, the app will offer you approximately six ideas that focus on the chosen party element. When I chose “less music†the first idea was to have a wild party with dancing and socializing, but with no music. The app will also pose some questions to trigger the thought process. However, it doesn’t always give you a detailed plan to execute the given idea. It didn’t tell me how to have a fun party with no music. It just basically said, “This is an interesting idea, now you figure out how to actually do it!†So, yes, the app does offer some unique party ideas, but it’s still up to you to figure out the execution. Each category provides about twelve unique ideas, six for the “more†side and six for the “less†side.
As stated earlier, you can enter in your own category to get ideas on. When this is done, the app will input your word into a generic idea template. For example, when I typed in dog, the app said, “Imagine at your party you have not one, but several dog. Imagine each dog is different from each other in some interesting way…†This is not exactly a great idea, but the app does attempt to provide a generic suggestion that may or may not suit your needs.
I actually found some of the ideas to be pretty interesting. Some ideas will have you saying, “Wow, I never thought of that.†But some ideas, like the “no dancing†one, are just a little too out there to really be practical. But, if you find one you like, you have some additional options. You can share the ideas via Facebook, SMS or email. You can also simply save the original idea or edit the idea to expand upon it. Anything you save will be stored in your idea cart for future reference. You can also simply add to your idea cart with your own thoughts.
Throughout this whole process, PIG provides some interesting background music to get your creative juices flowing. The looping music is basically a rap beat that may or may not get increasingly annoying. Also, the sound of the ball traveling through the metal pipes will absolutely become irritating. Luckily, there is an option to turn off the sound.
Overall, PIG actually provides some interesting and unique ideas to handle different aspects of your party. It also poses questions that make you think about how to execute the idea. There are definitely a few bugs to iron out and an update with more ideas would probably be useful. However, if you’re really having trouble thinking of some good ideas for your next frat party, then this app will probably help you out. Being a free app, I don’t see any reason not to try it out. It may just actually work for you.
