Pocket Tanks is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that clearly draws its design and gameplay straight from Scorched Earth. The game is set in the virtual battlefield in which two different tanks will duke it out to prove who has the better shot. Both angle and power have to be taken into consideration before the shot is let go. Anyone who has played scorched earth before, and I hope that is all of you out there, this game feels like a true homage to the original game.

With a simplistic feel and an amazing selection of weapons to choose from, the game will definitely make you put your thinking cap on and strategize every shot. But for a game that is so simply and elegantly put together, it is not without it's negatives. The user interface in the app is clean but a bit too simple in my humble opinion. The game offers to play single player or multiplayer, but the multiplayer is only local and the single player difficulties are selected via number. Such a great one on one game deserves an online feature and it was disappointing to find that it lacked it.

Overall, the game is interesting and definitely captures the feel of the original scorched earth as well as introduces some interesting weapons. But without a satisfying multiplayer, the app could become old once the angles and powers are figured out and mastered. It was a fun game for a while, but it just got old too quickly and left me wishing for more customization and features. There is a free version in the app store with limited weapon choices so I suggest checking that out before making the purchase.
