Prey was a highly anticipated game when it came out on consoles and eventually died to nothingness after people realized it was a bit over-hyped and didn't provide the experience most players were looking for. If that isn't foreshadowing for my review, I don't know what is. Don't get me wrong, this latest release for the iPhone and iPod Touch still features some interesting weapons and a Doom-like feel to it's gameplay. But I don't believe it really works as an iPhone game. Here's why.

The controls are the first thing that struck me as almost unplayable. The implementation of the dual digital joystick could have been a good thing, but on a touch screen I found myself getting more mad than enjoying it when I couldn't turn and aim on a dime. It took a lot of patience just to get through the first level to see what was next. Tapping the screen to shoot works well, but the game just begins to feel monotonous and simple, with no real depth at all. The story is still an interesting one and makes it worth while to play through, but the sometimes complicated controls ruined it for me. Still, I have yet to see an FPS that rivals this game in terms of features and that is something going for them. At the cheaper price this game is being offered at too, it may be worth it to check out.

This is one of the few games that left me torn as a played. I wanted to continue on with the story, but the gameplay just kept beating those hopes down. Check it out for yourselves if you really want the best FPS out there right now, but don't expect anything fluid or smooth about this. It just struggled a little too hard.
