Games » Rebel Onslaught Review

Rebel Onslaught is a 3D space shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The game has some pretty great 3D graphics and plenty of levels for you to dig your way through. Your objective in Rebel Onslaught is to protect the world from alien invaders. You?ll be doing this by flying around in your ship blasting other aliens to death. This game is on rails, so don?t expect any freeform flying, but you will have total control over where you can aim as you fly through each level.
There are two different control schemes that you can use in Rebel Onslaught: Touch and Accelerometer.

Touch requires you use the thumbpad in the bottom left of the screen. This works pretty well as you?ll soon realize you don?t need to move your thumb very far in order to move your ship that way. The accelerometer works exactly how you would expect and is much more enjoyable, except for the boss fights.
This game is everything that Iron Man should have been but fell short at accomplishing. It?s a great on rails shooter in a wonderful 3D environment. If you like any form of on rails shooters then definitely check out Rebel Onslaught.

Cheap, but incredible

Rebel Onslaught is all you'd ask from a 3D space shoot 'em up, but also much more than you'd expect from a 1$ game!

Controls-
Rebel Onslaught's ajustable tilt controls are a dream. They are very fluid and functionnal, and you can also opt for the little joystick at the bottom-left corner of the screen, which is a great addition. Fast barrel rolls are executed by touching the left or right side of the ship, while boosting is done by touching the ship itself. Never had any problems with that.

Fun-
If you've played Starfox before, you'll feel totally at home playing Rebel Onslaught. The on-rail shooting is truly intense and very surprising at times. Dodging enemy fire is exhilirating, so is dodging environmental obstacles. I loved the incredibly varied nature of the refreshing levels and also how unpredictable the gameplay is: there are tons of enemy classes and you'll be fighting against laser-shooting alien ships, missile-shooting alien ships, crazy turrets, bombers dropping exploding bombs plus other ones dropping mines you need to dodge in narrow spaces... that's insane. The pacing is great.

One complaint though: Incredibly frustrating difficulty spikes. Sometimes the game is very cruel, but the gameplay is mostly excellent.

Graphics-
While the graphics do not push the iPod Touch or iPhone's graphical capabilities very much, they still remain quite sharp and technically strong, with tons of animated objects flying through the air at once and beauthiful backgrounds.

Replayability-
Since there are no unlockables or customisation, why 4 stars for replayability?

Because for what it is, the game WILL pull you back for more play. It's a lot of fun to play. The lack of depth will always be noticeable, but it does not matter all that much.

Sound-
Rich, refreshing and unique sound awaits you, with some decent music. I really don't have any complaint against the game's sound!

Rebel Onslaught is worth every penny. It's 1$, but it could as well be 5$. You like space shooters? You'll love this game.
