The idea behind the remote control was that somebody somewhere didn't want to get up to change the channel. Or was that the reason people had children? Either way, the Remote app for the iPhone steps the whole thing up a notch.
If you've got a good deal of music on your computer or your AppleTV, chances are you've got them hooked up to a decent set of speakers. Now while running iTunes directly or loading up your Apple TV isn't exactly a difficult task, it's always nice to be able to control them from a far.

The Remote app allows you to do that very easily.
As long as both devices are connected to your internet, Remote will allow you to access the music and videos on either your computer or your AppleTV and give you a nice graphical interface to dig through. You'll be able to view all the music and videos on those devices as if you were using your iPod app on your phone, but the cool thing is, the music plays out of the computer or AppleTV.
There's not really any flaws with this app, and the fact that you need to authorize the remote on your actual system plus be on the same WiFi network means that your friends won't be blasting your Lit albums without you knowing. But how often is your computer really that far away from you?

It's cool, but is it really necessary?

As an Apple TV owner, I have to say this app was a great idea. In making the set-top box, Apple decided not to create a remote designed for it. Instead, I got a second tiny little white remote like the one that came with my MacBook Pro. Those remotes work fine, but they are a little overly simplistic. The Remote app solves the problem by giving you an iPhone-style iPod interface. It really saves having to use the lackluster remote to navigate the cumbersome menu system.
As for iTunes control, I haven't needed to use it that much (usually when iTunes is playing, I'm sitting at my computer). It was useful in a cross-country drive when I had to control my MacBook's iTunes library from the driver's seat and at a party when I could be a DJ from anywhere in the house.

Awesome App

Contrary to what the review here says, I think this app is perfect: every time I have a party at my house I hook up my macbook to the stereo which has the speakers outside and I control the music from my backyard, I has the same features as if you were actually listening to your iPod, the ability to create playlist on the spot is perfect, I just go around and ask people what they want to hear next, and people are amazed at what my iPhone can do so it's totally a conversation piece, this app is obviously for people who like to control their music at parties and reunions.

Remote Cannot Play Youtube on Apple TV (or can it?)

This remote app is everything you need to control the contents of your itunes account. I don't want to replay all the advantages of this app. For itunes on your computer, you can access all your content (music, videos, podcasts, etc) using your iphone without going to the actual computer.

However, for users of Apple TV, this remote has one major flaw. Apple TV allows you to play Youtube clips on your TV, and view photos that are on Iphoto in your (mac) computer. I have not been able to use the remote app to go to the settings, so that I may access the youtube setting on my Apple TV. This remote app allows you to access the contents of the computer (itunes) through your Apple TV, but nothing else. Apple TV is more than that; not being able to use this app to control your Apple TV settings (isn't it why it is called a remote in the first place?) so as to access your Youtube and photos and other settings makes this app lose out in the usefulness ratings. I hope they can fix that.
