Rogue Touch by ChronoSoft is a remake of the classic ASCII dungeon crawling action game "Rogue" which originated on UNIX based computer systems back in the early 80s. Rogue was a huge hit on college campuses and spawned many variants that have been ported to various gaming and computing platforms over the years. This newly developed title for iPhone/iPod Touch was built from the ground up to take full advantage of Apple?s powerful new mobile platform delivering touch screen control and interactivity, detailed graphics, new animations and limited sound resulting in a whole new version of Rogue for fans of the classic game and those new to the adventure title.

Controlling your character in Rogue Touch is exceptionally intuitive: simply tapping the screen around your fighter will move him, while tapping directly on him will bring up the action menu. From here you can shoot projectile weapons, access your inventory, and interact with your environment. Fighting enemies with a melee weapon simply involves tapping to move toward them. Battles are turned based, and at times resemble a game of chess, as carefully thought-out movements and attacks are necessary to win a battle.

Visually, Rogue Touch closely resembles the Atari variant of the original Rogue but with higher quality graphics and more detail. Enemies, items, and weapons are incredibly distinctive and easily discernible.

Where Rogue Touch does not deliver, however, is in its environments. Very few upgrades have been made to your surroundings since the Atari days of Rogue, so each area is consistently bland and ugly. This aspect certainly leaves something to be desired, especially considering the effort into making all the smaller objects unique and detailed.

The music in Rogue Touch is limited, but very well done. You?ll hear a unique score when starting the game, and another when you die. However, everything in-between is one looping "dungeon" track that plays absently during your escapades through the gray stone hallways. What?s worse is that there are no in-game sound effects at all. This makes the game feel a bit unfinished. Hopefully the developer will consider adding sound effects to a future update.

Despite these obvious flaws, however, Rogue Touch delivers an entertaining and accessible adventure that allows for both quick and extended gaming sessions anywhere you are.
