ShareLocal for Facebook is a new and interesting app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that is attempting to blend the mobile capabilities of a user's device with the social capabilities of Facebook to create a mashup of information. We've all been traveling in an area and felt the need to share that location or photos immediately with friends. Up until this point, it was too much of a hassle. ShareLocal gives users the option to immediately update their status with a map of their location, a photo and a small description with only a few taps. Say you are in the car and an accident happens, taking a quick picture and filling a message, you will be able to send the location of the event straight to Facebook in the form of a status update.
For as amazing of an idea as this is, it is not without its shortcomings. For one, every status update sent from ShareLocal gets personally branded with a text advertisement of ShareLocal.
In fact, the status itself states that this map and message have been shared using the ShareLocal iPhone application. This is particularly annoying when using it a lot due to your message being lost in the sea of status updates about the application you are using. If you are going to create an app that helps with social networking, don't make yourself the center of attention. The app allows for saving of locations or "places" as they are called in the app. It saves the date and gives the option for setting a star rating and notes.
Overall, this app has a great idea that could change the way we share information. But as it sits right now, its self promotion makes it more of an eyesore than a useful application. Being free in the app store, I suggest checking it out and trying it out for yourself.
