Space Invaders has been around longer than dirt, at least to most of us. Sorry to all of our older viewers. Almost every new console or gadget released has seen a rendition of this classic game, and you'd have to be a fool to think it wouldn't be headed its way to Apple's popular mobile devices. Taito has now officially created a version of their genre-defining arcade game for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Everything that made this game so great has been included, and almost nothing has been changed. While this can be seen as a good thing, let me dive into why this game may fall short in the long run. The game utilizes the digital arcade interface with a joystick and button on the screen. Great in theory, but I found it just took too much space up on the screen and left almost no viewing area. The controls are a bit hard when there are not physical buttons and joysticks to press and hold. One would think that Taito would have rethought their classic for the newer devices capabilities, but instead they decided to awkwardly implement their tried and true control scheme for a device that is not suited for it. On a slightly redeeming note, there are many options that can be changed in the main menu. They do provide an option to change to button controls or tilt controls, but the button board remains and the implementation is still awkward. Screen size can be bumped up to 140% and why they didn't do that by default, I have no clue.
Overall, Space Invaders is a classic game that will be remembered forever. But the game is ridiculously overpriced and as such I cannot recommend it for anyone but the most hardcore fans of the game.
