SpaceX is a new game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Reminiscent of space invaders and other Atari system hits, Space x utilizes old school game play in a new age format. The object: same as always, destroy the on coming alien ships before they destroy you. By tilting your mobile device you control your little ship as it faces hundreds of mindless drones who don't seem to mind driving right into you to their doom.
Ketra Software, the app's creator, claims it offers hours of intense gameplay. I found that by the end of level 2 ,which took me two minutes to get through, the pounding techno soundtrack and limited user interface provided a mind numbing experience. The problem: all you can do is steer and upgrade.
There is no trigger button or secondary weapons, or anything. just steer and let the program do all the work. Some positive elements are that you can drastically upgrade your weapons after just the first level, game play is simple, and high scores can be ranked locally as well as globally. The graphics are clear and game processes run very well. The downsides are the limited user interface, annoying soundtrack and repetitive gameplay, and unless you actually hold your iPhone or iPod touch level, you cant control the ship, meaning you have to lean over your mobile device for the entire game looking straight down for the "hours of intense game play" will make you sore quickly.
Another annoying feature is that once in the gameplay, you cannot go back to the start menu without closing the game completely. Considering the simplicity of the app and limited options for game play, and the fact that you can find a dozen more like it in the app store, I would not spend money on SpaceX.
