Hovercraft racers are not a new concept to the iPhone. We've seen plenty of them make their way through the app store jungle attempting to duplicate the success of their console brothers. But none of them have arguably ever held up when compared. They always felt a little lack-luster and the controls make it a bit too hard to enjoy. Speed Forge Extreme is attempting to change all of that.
The game is by far the most beautiful futuristic racer I have ever seen on the iPhone.
Users with a 3GS get an even more beautiful experience with bloom, particle effects, and motion blur to add to the immersion. The game is controlled by tilting but offers different control schemes to choose how you accelerate or turn. As players progress through the different levels, they will unlock various features of the game like weapons or different vehicles. The game is more than just racing though, it also throws in a few arena battles with weapons readily available. One complaint I found was that I had no way to block incoming projectiles, you are forced to take a hit and being in first place, that could mean losing the round.
Overall, the game is amazing to look at and fun to play. It is a great testament to what the iPhone is capable of and I hope to see more apps follow the standard of quality this one exercises.
