Spend is another budget tracking app for the iPhone that allows you to keep track of what you've got left to spend for a specific budget for a given period of time. It's a great and handy way to keep an eye on exactly what you've got left without going over, and it even provides you color coded warnings incase you're getting close.
You can set out all the different budgets that you have currently available, whether it be Food or your weekly Comic Book budget. The lite version of the app limits you at 5 different categories, but the full version doesn't have any restrictions. You can set either a daily or weekly budget, and it will give you a read out of exactly how much you have available for that time period.
Once you've set your budget, you can then start marking down what you spend.

This is great if you want to keep track of your spending trends, as it does mark it by what day and give you the ability to write out what you spent it on. It will also alert you by turning red when you're in your last few dollars.
Spend even offers an export function, making it pretty cool over all. As a budget tracking app, it's got all the necessary features to make it worth having, but it's not something comprehensive enough for people looking to track all of their finances long term. Probably more something geared towards young adults.

Spend is a great, if simple, spending tracker. It does exactly what it purports to and little else. You can set specific budgets however you like, setting each one to repeat after a certain amount of time (day, week, month, year, etc.). It's a great way to map your own spending habits to see where you need to tighten your belt.

Sadly, the app isn't perfect. The UI can be a bit cumbersome, especially when you want to edit the settings of a budget; you have to go digging in menus a little. My only major gripe is that you can't set any kind of source of funding. No bank accounts, no credit cards, or anything. You can add money to any budget you want, but it would be very helpful if you could also track your bank account balances and credit limits, then deduct money from the appropriate source. This would be a great addition to the next version.

There may be another app that provides this (this is the first app of this kind I've tried), but I would love to have a website or desktop program that allows for cross-platform data entry. If you've got a lot of receipts backed up it'd be easier to enter all those expenses on a keyboard rather than on your iPhone or iPod touch. That's probably something that won't happen with this app, but it'd be nice.

While not as robustly featured as it could be, Spend is very useful and worth its low price. And major kudos to the developer for doing something you don't see enough on the App Store: a free preview version. The free version just gives you a taste for what the full app features, and it really teases the possibilities for just how much you can track in the full version. If only more developers would release free versions so I wouldn't have to spend money on apps I later wish I hadn't.
