Star Trek Mobile is an arcade style, vertical shooting game for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
When you first open this app, you are given an overwhelming number of menu options to choose from. As always, I recommend tapping the "help" option, as there is much more detailed information covered than what I could provide. Tapping the "campaign" option from the main screen will begin the story mode. You will then be taken to a level select screen. Here you can play the main objective, or play any of the side objectives. After completing a main objective, more maps will become available for you to select from.
Tapping an objective, then tapping "enter sector" will begin the game. With the default control scheme, autofire is enabled and moving is achieved by dragging your finger as to where you would like to move. Collecting items in space is as simple as flying near enough so that it is picked up by the tractor beam. Picking up these items will give you extra points or stronger weapons for you to use. If you earn an achievement, or kill enough enemies, you will be given a star to upgrade your ship.
At the end of each mission is where you can spend the stars to upgrade the ships' power or defense systems. Each system can be upgraded a total of three times.
When I first saw this app in the "Featured" section in the AppStore, I was really excited. After watching the review of the "Terminator Salvation" game, I was half expecting that EA, the publisher, would create something just as fun. Sadly, I was mistaken. The biggest problem that I have with this application is that it doesn't feel like it was created for the iPhone. I might be wrong, but it feels as if the developers ported the game from a java enabled phone. The reason I feel like this is that the graphics for this game really do not show off the hardware capabilities that the iPhone possesses. With the Ship upgrades, there is plenty of replay value, as trying to level up your ship is time consuming. For $2.99, the price of this app isn't too expensive, but I would recommend that you instead use the money for another app, such as iFighter or Siberian Strike. However, if you love the new Star Trek movie, then you will be right at home with this app.
