SUMMARY: Pigs do fly! Dodge cleavers and saw blades in this fun and addicting arcade game

Super Turbo Action Pig is a fun and mildly addicting arcade game from Joystick Generals. It’s a simple game with a simple goal; fly as far as you can without being butchered by flying cleavers and saw blades. It’s definitely a creative approach to this genre, but it also lacks the replay value necessary to make these games successful.

The saying, “When pigs fly,” has a whole new meaning with this game. Here, you actually take control of a flying pig that must dodge several obstacles being thrown at it by the evil butcher. The pig flies around using two rockets strapped to its body. All you have to do is tap on the thruster to get the pig to go up. Holding the thruster down will keep the pig at the top of the screen, but you can’t keep him there forever. You’ll need to find the balance of how often to tap on the thruster to keep the pig away from the obstacles. There are real life physics in play, so when you use the thruster while the pig is falling, he doesn’t just instantly go up. The thrusters slow his descent first, and then gradually increase his movement upward. From the very start of the game it becomes challenging to maneuver the pig around. You’ll spend quite a bit of time playing before you really get the hang of the controls.

You earn points for each obstacle you dodge as you fly through the air. The obstacles include cleavers, saw blades, spikes and missiles. That may seem like a good amount of obstacles, but it really gets old seeing the same things fly by all the time. At the time of this review, the app is only in its 1.0 stage, so hopefully the next update will bring additional content to the game. More obstacles and power ups are necessary to add the much needed replay value this game lacks. There are actually no power ups at all in this game. Why not add an attack power up so the pig can shoot at the cleavers? The OpenFeint capability and the use of achievements definitely save this game from failure. The achievements add some replay value, but it’s still not enough. There’ s a ton of potential here, and hopefully the developer will see that and take advantage of it.

The only other problem I have with the game is the size of the obstacles that you have to dodge. They are just a bit too large and it makes things that much difficult. I guess it adds to the challenge of the game. But, sometimes, I think I should be able to make it through, but end up dying due to the size of the obstacle.

The graphics, sound and music are all top-notch in this game. It has a nice cartoonish feel that fits the gameplay well. Super Turbo Action Pig is fun, addicting and absolutely has my recommendation. I just hope the developer adds some more content so the game can still be fun after just a few days.
