When Top Gun the movie came out, everyone was melting at the awesome fighter jets and the smooth antics of Tom Cruise. Ever since the movie became a hit, Paramount Pictures has been milking the rights to the blockbuster with many different games for popular consoles. Now it's the iPhone's turn to receive some loving. Top Gun has been released for the iPhone and iPod Touch now and it is a bittersweet release. The game features the some of the original music and characters from the picture including the famous Danger Zone song.
Well that all fine and dandy but how does the game actually play? The controls are based on tilting the device to steer. The jet will move to different quadrants of the screen based on how you tilt. There are sections called Danger Zones that will destroy your aircraft if you are caught in them. The controls are actually extremely responsive.
The jet fighter moves fluidly through the air as you turn and is really animated well. The game features only a single player mode and is not an open world to fly around in as one would hope. The course of the game is predetermined and the player can only fly within the scope of the screen. Gun and missles work fine and pretty much how one would expect them to.
Overall, with 10 mitions set in different environments, Top Gun is a well-made game that can offer some great experiences. But it will get old quickly with not much variety in gameplay. So for the lower price it's offered at, I recommend checking it out. But this game is not one that will stay for long. Fun gameplay and great animation, but just not enough content and variety to keep a player's interest.
