Top Gun is still arguably one of Tom Cruise’s most recognizable movies and definitely set the standard for air combat movies. The movie is known for it’s high speed combat and story of friendship, love, and sacrifice. There was an app released for iPhones and we reviewed it with all of its shortcomings but now there is a sequel. Top Gun 2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a re-imagining of the first game and basically improves on every part of the experience.
This new app will have you flying at high speeds controlling a jet of your choice. As you complete levels, you will be able to upgrade your aircraft to be able to pack more firepower and deal out that much more damage. The gameplay in this new version has changed along with a much improved interface and graphic facelift. Now you’ll have the ability to shoot missile, your Vulcan rounds, and use a temporary shield to deflect incoming missiles. Still, despite all the aesthetic changes and new gameplay mechanics, the game somehow fell short from being something entertaining. The music in the game did not seem to fit the tone of the game and the levels eventually started to feel the same. At one point I realized that by letting my ship stay in the center, I could pass the level with barely a scratch by tapping the shield and missile barrage buttons appropriately.
Overall, this is a game I would need to pass. It looks great, but didn’t keep my interest for very long.
